7 Free mobile apps for Wikipedia readers and contributors

Wikipedia is the world foremost website for information and knowledge of all things possible.  If you want to access it or edit it (if you are registered with Wikipedia) here are  6 free apps for mobiles with their reviews.

Wikipedia: for Android, iOS(named Wikipedia Mobile) and Blackberry:

This is official Wikipedia app and  displays Wikipedia in 280-odd languages.  You can share the information using the Share function while another useful- Search Nearby,  gives you information about events happening nearby using Geo-tagging. (The map is built on OpenSteetMaps using MapQuest tiles.) The UI  is easy,  no-frills and has full screen search function which helps find pages quickly. The Homepage displays article of the day.

The problem is that this  app is  read-only version and does not support logging in.

Wikipedia beta for Android

This is a beta version (v1.4) for Android.  It has all the functions of above app plus a night theme called Solarized Dark and the search bar auto hides after a few moments. The new typography adds to the appeal of the UI. Languages like  Arabic  that are read right-to-left have better support in this version.  However a word of caution, this is still a beta version and spring some surprises.

Wikitrack for Android
This is  basically a tracking software for Wiki editors who want to keep track of thier  own work.  You can log in to Wikipedia and access the 'Contributions' and 'Watchlist' part of your dashboard. The App is light and fast and is free and ad free.  However only English is supported as of now with different versions for Tamil, SanskritKannada and Malayalam  Wikipedias.

LoboWiki - Wikipedia Reader for Android Ice Cream Sandwich (V4.x): This app is optimized for ICS with HOLO, Google's theme recommended  for apps running on ICS and later versions. It supports 30 languages including English. The UI is neat and tailor  made for long reading. Inter Wiki links are queued and can be accessed without need of loading the already searched pages.

Windows Phone Wikipedia app

Wikipedia for Windows Phone : This app  is most colourful and aesthetically appealing of all apps listed. It supports 100 languages and uses Windows Phones tiling system to max with every  tile having accented colours. This app also support inter wiki surfing and  a search function, displays nearby locations, enables sharing of pages and an offline mode. You can bookmark your favourite Wikipedia pages.

This app is developed by Indie developers

Tablet Browser for Wikipedia for Android:  As the name suggest  this app is for tablets running  Honeycomb, Ice cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean OS.  The default language is English with limited support for other languages. You can re-size the page using pinch-zoom.
This is it, keep you posted for further developments.
