According to reports, Apple may be changing up the type of docking port to be used on the next gen iPhone in an effort to save space.
Those hoping for an implementation of an existing standard should not hold their breath though. Viable options might be a microUSB port, but the data transfer speeds would be way too slow. The new Thunderbolt would be another option, but it only has limited support. They may simply be cutting down the size of it's current docking port, but whether or not it will still be a 30 pin connection is a mystery. The next iPhone would be the most likely candidate to introduce the new tech. Expect a slew of third party cables and adapters shortly after it's official announcement.
