android-malware

Google has removed 21 Malware Apps from the Android market that had already reached  50.000 downloads.   The apps seemed to be a pirated version of other apps already on the market and there were all published under the same developer: Myournet

It has not been the first time of malware apps on smartphones but this time they were on Android Market and not only on warez sites.

The problem seems to be solved now but you might wanna check if you have downloaded any of the following apps from the developer Myournet:
* Falling Down
* Super Guitar Solo
* Super History Eraser
* Photo Editor
* Super Ringtone Maker
* Super Sex Positions
* Hot Sexy Videos
* Chess
* Hilton Sex Sound
* Screaming Sexy Japanese Girls
* Falling Ball Dodge
* Scientific Calculator
* Dice Roller
* Advanced Currency Converter
* APP Uninstaller
* Funny Paint
* Spider Man

This brings again the discussion of the importance of Anti-Virus apps on smartphones.

This is why I prefer App Store over Android Market! Sure there have been reports of malware there too, but you can't release an app under the same name, looking exactly the same in App Store!

And there shouldn't be a need for Anti-Virus if I use the built in market. Can't be that hard for both Apple and Google to have anti-viruses running on their servers checking uploaded apps, and putting infected apps aside for closer inspections.

I totally agree, why cant google implement a anti-virus/malware system on their market system? But ofc. you should have antivirus if you install apps from outside the market.

Fortunately, I had none of those installed. Phew...
I agree though that there should be a stronger checks for viruses/malware in the apps before allowing them in the Market.

26 more malware apps removed from the Market: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2075315/google-forced-purge-malicious-android-market-apps

Google really needs to certificate better the apps that they make available at the market...  Tongue

Definitely a double edged sword from a developers perspective. Apple can be a real problem when you have an update that needs to get out quickly (although waits have come down) but the review policy does provide some comfort for people using the app store which is generally going to create more trust. Basically you are trading a slow release process in exchange for more credibility.
