Nokia's N97 smartphone has scored an own goal with its build-quality, and demand is slow. Nokia is failing to live up to its number one status

The N97 smartphone is Nokia’s major calling card; the article it would present as evidence of its manufacturing prowess.

Of manufacturers that claim smartphones in their portfolios, the N97 comes off worst. Nokia – the incumbent, the specialist, the champ – cannot live up to Apple (iPhone 3G S), Samsung (I8910 HD), BlackBerry (Bold) or Palm (Pre).

Sony Ericsson’s X1 is old, and should be discounted. LG does not work in the space. Motorola? Who?

Demand reflects this. The N97’s trade value has tumbled badly again. The software glitches and design faults compound things.

Bad, when manufacturing is grim generally, and the smartphone market is the great hope. Will Symbian ditch S60?

On this evidence, another lousy Nokia touchscreen, perhaps it should start over.

I still think the N97 is a beautiful phone... i wish Nokia had put more thought into the hardware before releasing it... I would never have switched
