    @steven25: How do you mean this? Who has ever removed the original hs? I don't mean the base or other plugins that can be selected in the list, I mean the hs itself.

    I think you can not get another HS running on 5800 until 5800's current menu constructure modified to matrix menu...
    Because Symbian^3 HS try to imported will only run, if matrix menu support getting for 5800...

    You can check that Symbian^3 HS requires matrix menu from here;
    http://developer.symbian.org/oss?sort=lastchange

    by downloading latest Symbian^3 Homescreen packages (FCL/sf/app/homescreen andFCL/sf/mw/homescreensrv) compiled by kashif, Cmorloc, and Jake...

    or just look at here;

    S^3 HS just a enhanced version of N97's HS (e.g. has multiple homescreen pages, scrollable contacs bar feature added to standard widget contacts...) but, bot of S^3 and N97 HS have same platform reqirements like HSPS support and Matrix menu support...
    The problem is that S60V5 platform (5800, SE Satio, i8910 ...) has not support for matrix menu and HSPS (widget installation service)
    For that reason no difference between S^^3 HS and N97 HS for installing them to S60V5 platform....
    So, your question "i don't understand! S^3 hs or N97 hs?" is meanless...
    Understand, now?

    Objection! IMHO there is a big difference in practice: we have the S^3 sources so we can bypass these problems and build the missing components in a way that it works in 5800's system. For N97's HS we only have the binaries which we can't modify. So we would have to replace some important system libs which could break the whole system.

    There is a contradiction in your explanation...
    How could you build missing components which would works in S60V5 (5800), without having Symbian^1 (S60V5) source codes?
    File dependencies you can reach from S^3 are valid for only S^3, they do not give info about dependencies of S60V5...
    In order to modify a OS platform (e.g. S60V5) for some addition of features (e.g. S^3 HS), should we have sources of these features which belongs to another platform (e.g. S^3) or should we have sources of desired platform (S60V5)?
    I do not know which one is correct, but according to me sources of S60V5 should be exist for modifying some features, not sources of S^3...
    Maybe i am wrong, but i want to know this detail if someone give correct info about this...

    OK, what I wanted to say is the following:

    The S^3 HS depends on some features which are not available on 5800. But we cannot simply copy the dlls where these features are defined, because they are not compatible to the old ones and would break the system. So we have three possible solutions to include the features.

    1. The most simple one: build the needed S^3 dlls with different names and install them parallel to the 5800 dlls. (We need only S^3 sources to do so.)

    2. Advanced: build the needed S^3 dlls to be binary compatible to the 5800 ones. This is rather difficult if we don't have 5800 sources, but I think it could be possible. But I don't know the exact structure of symbian dlls and in which way the dlls can be manipulated.

    3. Impossible: simply build the S^3 dlls and relink all 5800 programs against them

    None of the three works if we only have 5800 and N97 binaries.

    Oppositely, i think your first possibility is impossible...
    Have you ever checked what files included in S^3 HS package compiled by Jake, Cmorloc and Kashif?
    How will you succeed that just naming files of S^3 HS package with correctly corresponding 5800's related files?
    It is not a solution that naming new featured files exactly with corresponding 5800's files and install them, because correspondence of new featured files not exist in the content of 5800...
    But, it could be possible if also we use dummy files for older ones...
    Means that building neeeded files and import them to 5800 so that they would be enable requirements of S^3 HS Package (HSPS, Matrix menu, Content publishing,...) meanwhile (if it is possible) building dummy files for default menu and HS of 5800 and naming them exactly with related 5800 files and importing also them to 5800 so that older menu structure and HS of 5800 disappeared completely...
    However, even if we would build entirely new files which would gain matrix menu, hsps, etc. services, how these files could be flashed to 5800 with only ROFS2 and ROFS3 cooking?
    We are limited with 33mb for ROFS2 (but could not be used all of this amount, maybe used 15-20mb of it) and 8mb for ROFS3 cooking since *.C00 cooking still not supported.
    20+8=28mb space would be enough for handling required features at 5800 firmware?
