That's pretty pointless IMO. I'd rather convert them to a higher resolution.....

u better try total video converter. just drag ur movie, select ur platform (nokia symbian xxx series) insert subtitle, and convert. no need to think about size or audio..it is all pre-set.

there's a program called "mediacoder", its a general encoding program to change almost any format into anything else. I use it quite often for all my encode changes.... i use these settings for my 5800 XM, and have no playback issues (slight blocking is seen with lots of motion in the video, but its only encountered maybe 10% of the time or less... i've done full episodes of top gear with no issues on these settings) with fullscreen resolution.

    Video tab
    - Format: MPEG4
    - Mode: Bitrate-based, 880kbps (1500kbps will deliver flawless video, but your files will be massive.... 3 minutes of video went from 19 megs, to 34mb)
    Audio tab
    - Encoder: CT AAC+ (requires winamp to be installed)
    - on the right side tabs
    -- Bitrate: 128kbps
    -- type: LC-AAC
    -- Mode: Stereo
    -- MPEG-4 AAC selected
    Container tab
    - Container: MPEG4
    - Multiplexer: auto select
    Picture Tab
    - resize ticked off: 640x360 (no default, just type the resolution into the box and it will accept it), global ticked off
    - Crop: disabled
    - Frame Rate ticked off: 30.000, global ticked off

IMO, it's best to go for converting your video to the format best played by the phone to get optimum results. Not only it gives good results, it also helps that the size of the original file is reduced so that it takes minimum space in the memory card. I have tried several converters for my 5800 but have found Format factory as the best freeware available. It's got a variety of input and output options and has no restrictions on video time that can be converted. What's more it's got All to mobile Devices option which includes Nokia 5800 too. An advice - if you are using this converter, click on Nokia 5800 options and change Aspect ratio to 16:9 to get full screen playable videos. That will utilise every square mm of your 5800 screen and It's awesome in looks!! Some features:
1 support converting all popular video, audio, picture formats to others.
2 Repair damaged video and audio file.
    3 Reducing Multimedia file size.
4 Support iphone,ipod,5800XM multimedia file formats.
    5 Picture converting supports Zoom,Rotate/Flip,tags.
    6 DVD Ripper.
    Input-Output:
    All to MP4/3GP/MPG/AVI/WMV/FLV/SWF.
    All to MP3/WMA/AMR/OGG/AAC/WAV.
    All to JPG/BMP/PNG/TIF/ICO/GIF/TGA.
Rip DVD to video file , Rip Music CD to audio file.
    MP4 files support iPod/iPhone/PSP/BlackBerry format.
    Source files support RMVB.

Link for this freeware is Format Factory Download

If someone is on Linux and has not been able to find a good way to convert videos for this phone, I have made a script that uses ffmpeg to make the conversion. It will make a mpeg4 coded file in mp4 format with aac audio codec @ 96kb/s and video bitrate @ ~1000kb/s with a resolution of nHD(640x360). It will not reduce the size very much in comparison with original file and it will be in 16x9 format, so if you input is in 4:3 it will be somewhat distorted... But the quality is superb

Guess it would work on Windows to with ffmpeg installed, but not tried...

If there is interesst I could upload it as an attachment to this thread...

I got some feedback and I'll attach the scipt I described in my previous post in this thread...

Just run the script on the commandline with the input-file as the only paramater, it will derive the output-name from the name of the input-file...

I have set the script to use 1 thread to be safe, but that can be changed in the source of the scipt with ease if you got a cpu that can take moe(I use 3 threads on my AMD phenom x4)... Please also read the comments in the sources before use so you get an idea about what the scipt does...

    Hope there is no problems!

    example...

    $ ffmpeg4okia.sh input-file-name.avi

will produce an output filename like "input-file-name.nHD.mp4"

    !!!!!!!!!
couldnt attach a file named ".sh" so the attachment is named .txt but you shold change it to ".sh" or anything you like realy.. .sh is common tho...
When you got it, make it executable like this 'chmod +x ffmpeg4nokia.sh'
If you want to be able to run it from any location, place it somewhere in your $PATH, like /usr/local/bin, 'mv ffmpeg4nokia.sh /usr/local/bin/' you might need to be root to do that...
    !!!!!!!!

    hey slanbarn,
thanks, i had a little problem but a bit of googling helped to run the script. if anyone has problem running this then try to use dos2unix command to convert the file from windows' filetype to linux's...
    more about this:
    http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ectory-461400/

    else:
i set the threads to 2 in the script file but only one core is working of my core2duo...do you have any idea?

did you ever had probleam playing on the phone the converted movies if the original was a "packed avi"? i get this message durring the conversation:
    Code:
[NULL @ 0x182bed0]Invalid and inefficient vfw-avi packed B frames detected
it continues to convert and the final mp4 file is playing nicely in my mplayer but some of it fails to play on my nokia 5800...any suggestions?
    thanks in advance...
