Strange you have this problem now, it was common on early series of Nokia 5800s around late 2008/early 2009, they shipped with faulty earpiece. Mine had it too, got fixed at Nokia care.

I hear you mate, i had the same problem. I first noticed the problems when i had the phone for 2 weeks, sometimes when talking i couldn't hear the guy on the other side clearly. I took the phone to my carrier shop since i bought it on contract and then they sent it to authorized Nokia care center (there's only one in my country ). Two weeks later i got the phone back, but all they did was software update. Of course, problem was not solved. Then i googled a bit and found out about the faulty earpice. I took the phone back to the carrier shop, told them about the earpiece, the guy at the shop even tried talking on the phone but he was trying to convince me that it's not the problem, only the speaker is not as loud. He said they never heard about the earpiece problem , and they didn't have any complaints till then (that might be true, i bought the phone very soon it got available). Of course I was pissed off, left the shop and called the Nokia care center myself - they told me to send them the phone and i did - got the phone few weeks later, the changed the earpiece and the phone is working great ever since, for a year now.
