    Default Symbian S3 backwards compatible?

    Guys,

Do we know if existing Symbian apps will be able to run on the N8 and other S3 devices?

As it looks like S3 might not be around for too long or supported by many (including Nokia itself), it might be a great option to have.

    Thoughts?

    Neil

S60v5 apps will run on S^3 (most of them).

As how I understand it, the N8 will be the bridge between S^1 (s60 5th) and S^4 (next version of Symbian touch OS). N8 is able to run almost all applications for s60v5 and also Qt applications (which there isn't many yet) for S^4. With popularity of S^3 Nokia will force developers to use Qt to code their apps and S^4 can then drop backward support for s60v5 and run only Qt applications. So thinking another way perhaps S^3 is better than S^4.

    Found on http://developer.symbian.org/wiki/in...K_I_can_use.3F

Applications written using the Symbian^1 SDK will run on Symbian^3 devices.
    ...
It's true that there's a compatibility break in S^4, but firstly that doesn't mean that all your code will be redundant at that point, and secondly there will be many tens of millions of S^3 devices to get your applications onto. S^3 is also broadly compatible with the previous Symbian releases (S^1 and S^2). Additionally, if your application can be written using only the Qt libraries that are currently available, then it can be supported on on Symbian devices back to S60 3rd Edition, and those based on future Symbian platform releases. Web runtime will also be updated and improved between S^3 and S^4. Although compatibility will be maintained, you will be required to repackage your WRT applications using the W3C packaging standard to use them on S^4.

Porting applications from S60 5th Edition to Symbian^3
This section describes the changes required for applications to work on Symbian^3.

Add the following macro in your application's MMP files. This is required because the structure of the source code has changed.
    APP_LAYER_SYSTEMINCLUDE
