Fortunately for S^3 users, Nokia has announced that S^3 will morph into S^4 trough progressive updates.

What I thought will never happen, actually happened. Nokia woke up.

Symbian^4 is cancelled! Symbian is dead now, N8 will get only UI changes to MeeGo UI? But The User Interface will change on Nokia n8 cauz nokia doesn't want the phone look like symbian

    Hey,

I asked the Nokia Press Services people what will happen with S^1 devices. Here is what Mark Durrant of Nokia wrote back to me:

"We will offer updates to S^1 updates but the UI of S^1 will not evolve into the new Symbian.

Our focus for the new Symbian is on touch capable devices, building on the current S^3 and evolving to the look and feel planned for S^4 in a series of steps using Qt / Qt Quick.

For applications written in Qt, these can already be installed to S^1 devices using the Smart Installer.

    Regards ... Mark"

So, S^3 will evolve into what was meant to be S^4, because as they said in the October 21st press release, there won't be anymore S^3 or S^4, but only Symbian, which will be evolving.

It's true that Sony Erricsson and Samsung have withdrawn their support for the Symbian foundation, but Nokia will continue to back the Symbian Foundation, with lesser employees than before, but Symbian will move forward.

they all come with Symbian^3,so don't expect from Nokia any Meego devices untill next year as meego is still in the embryonic stage and it takes time to grow up to become solid, sturdy software. :P
HAHA I love correcting wrong grammar.
    and C5-03 is S^1 (S60 5th) with some kernel features from S^3 and a 600 MHZ ARM11 processor.
N8 owners (including me :P), don't give up yet, S^4 might be based entirely on MeeGo or a new platform!
If it's a new platform, expect it to be (if not better than Meego) at least S40v6 stable-ish and iOS look-ish.

There is no Symbian^4 anymore, it's been dropped down. Instead, Symbian (former Symbian^3) will continue the development in a single line, instead of paraller development branches. This is a good news for anybody who got N8, since it will most likely got as many updates as 5800 XM (first device of previous platform version). PR2 software will already bring a lot of improvements, like updates homescreen scrolling, QWERTY keyboard, new browser etc. You have to remember that Symbian(^3) is very young and will see lot of updates since there is no Symbian^4 anymore.

But about Meego, it's not out yet and there is no official news about the release, so it won't happen in near future (6 months at least).

One benefit of this simplified approach is that planned and future improvements in Symbian will be developed in Qt and will be compatible with the existing Symbian^3 platform release. This means that Nokia's continued commitment to develop the Symbian platform will benefit not only future users of Symbian-based products, but will result in updates and upgrades for existing Symbian^3 users. The resulting change to a model of continuous evolution replaces the previous release-based model. Nokia will no longer refer to Symbian^3 or Symbian^4. The benefit to consumers will be a constant improvement in the experience of their Symbian-based Nokia products.
