This was a miss quote on Reuters behalf, it was 100,000 in the first 5 weeks not months, Nokia clarified the news story.

And anyway, its choice, when I show my iPhone loving mates my N900 it just shuts them straight up.

The chunky computer-like handset -- with slide-out keyboard and a touch screen -- has found support among hard-core technology specialists but failed to attract a wider audience.

A spokesman for Nokia, the world's top cellphone maker, declined to comment on the sales number, saying the company was pleased with sales, but an executive was more bullish.

"Sales have substantially exceeded expectations," Alberto Torres, head of Nokia's solutions business, told the Open Mobile Summit trade conference in London this week.

Nokia has been unable to mount a serious challenge to Apple three years after the iPhone's launch. Its last hit smartphone model, the N95, was unveiled in 2006.

The sales of less than 100,000 N900s compares with sales of 8.75 million iPhones in January-March alone.

The N900, which went on sale last November, is Nokia's first phone running the Linux Maemo operating system, which analysts see as a key for Nokia to regain ground in the coming years.

In February this year Nokia unveiled a plan to merge Maemo with Intel's Moblin operating system.

Nokia sold 50,000 N900s in the last quarter of 2009, and quarterly sales fell in January-March, Gartner statistics showed. Gartner does not track phone sales per model, but as the N900 is the only phone using Maemo, the statistics for operating systems show sales for the model.

-The best web-experience - if it could ever render the pages, and not open links that I scroll past all the time.
-Great for multimedia - As long as it's over-clocked.
-A mobile computer - it's as unstable as one running Win ME, so Nokia might be on to something here, oh wait, we wanted stability as in Win 2K!

This device is purely for the hackers that thinks that regular computers are way to mainstream. It's not fun to ALWAYS have to find out why the Facebook app this time was unable to connect to my account, write line after line in Xterm only to find out that Nokia excluded a vital command that I needed and therefore I have to download it and start all over again, or to manually have to uninstall application after application until I have enough free space on root to receive an SMS.
And I hate to be a beta-tester for ALL useful apps for the device, this just adds to the instability of the device.

So why did the N900 flop? It's a way to thin product, and therefore Maemo and also MeeGo have started out with a bad reputation.
I can tell you that I'm not planning to buy a Nokia next time. The news about MeeGo not coming to the N900 was the final straw.
Maybe you aren't geek enough for the N900.

N900 has issues. But its not a phone. Its a pocket PC with a phone feature. Its not for the amateur.

The problem for end users with Nokia is, Its never about one phone like with Apple... While the iPhone 3GS will sell a certain number of units for the year, Nokia will have many many phones selling all over the world... So i don't think its fair to compare sales of N900 and iPhone rather all Nokia sales vs iPhone...

For a phone that attracted a certain audience i think the N900 did pretty well considering it is only a small percentile of the company's device range.

If you want to talk about sales numbers, I would like to see how many unsubsidized iphones have been sold.

agree, noobs with no background in software dev or being a techie will have a hard time using this phone. If they think the n900 is just a 'status' phone then /tear to you, go get an ipod.

Don't blame N900 brecause you are a newbee
It's not for making calls though you can
It's a ultra mobile PC which is just more than excellent

    You want a phone?
    Go for something else!

Warning: N900 is not for newbee mobile users or noobs
