Default Jailbreaking my 3GS MC model - What went wrong

    i have the latest 3gs, 3.1.3 (7e1, mc model
i followed the jailbreaking method on here
but before i did i saved my shsh file with the auto shsh software to my pc
i then followed the instructions on here to jailbreak
    it seemed to work
phone restarted, cydia icon was on homepage
i clicked it and it did its loading etc then the screen went blank, the phone restarted and all my icons had gone!
no safari, itunes, app store, i was left with basic icons.
so i put the phone into restore mode which cleared it all up within 10 mins
so im back to the beginning now.

can someone nice genius on here either tell me what i need to do before i jailbreak if im going wrong etc
or better still how about an IDIOTS GUIDE TO JAILBREAK. ESPECIALLY FOR IDIOTS LIKE ME!!

cheers if anyone can help out, i am clued up about most things technical but this stumped me

ill await instructions before trying again..

try to jailbreak the device one more time and see if it still goes wrong. make sure that you have a backup of the OS before you jailbreak it so that you can restore it!
    testing

Did you read what is says on the spirit page?
    Requirements
Any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch on firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 3.2.
An activated device: one not stuck on the Connect to iTunes or Emergency Call screen.
Any version of iTunes 9 (including 9.1.1).
Syncing with iTunes before trying this is highly recommended. (An issue has been reported where Spirit deletes the photos on the device. I will investigate this; in the meantime, please make sure your photos are backed up.)

Worked a treat on my MC model ipod touch
