Default Press: Apple delays international iPad sales to end of May

Apple Inc. fans living outside of the U.S. still waiting for an iPad will need to be a little more patient or tap into a rising gray market. Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., postponed the overseas launch by one month, moving it to the end of May, because of surprisingly strong demand in the U.S., which includes preorders for the yet-to-launch iPad that works with AT&T Inc.'s network. The delay underscores the difficulty of launching a wholly new product for a company even as detail-oriented as Apple.

"It's always challenging to figure out when a new product comes out what the demand is," said Maynard Um, an analyst at UBS.
The delay affects the countries that were expected to get the iPad: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the U.K. International operators - including Vodafone Group PLC, France Telecom's Orange and Telefonica SA's O2 - said Wednesday in separate, brief statements that they would announce dedicated price plans for the iPad at the end of May for the countries in which they will offer the device.
The iPad launched earlier this month, with sales over the first weekend hitting all but the highest estimates. Apple said Wednesday that it sold 500,000 units in its first week. The technology industry is closely eyeing how the iPad fares because it represents the company's first foray into a new category since the original iPhone launched three years ago.
Apple originally delayed the U.S. launch of the iPad by a few days from the end of March to April 3, but the international delay has some analysts more bullish.
"Demand has been extraordinarily strong," said Yair Reiner, an analyst at Oppenheimer & Co."Apple has a high quality problem on its hands."

Are you seriously questioning the great Steve Jobs? Many before you have tried and have all failed miserably and none of them get invited to any of his key speeches, but seriously, I'm with you on the USB port, it would be so cool if I could plug in a web cam or wireless mouse, but remember, it's not a computer, it's an iPad.
