You may well remember back in January when the Nexus was released and again at the Google IO conference, the next version of the Android operating system 3.0 'Gingerbread' was mentioned? Well, some more details have emerged today.

This are simply the musings of Mobile-review.com’s Eldar Murtazin, there is no way to confirm anything, so take these with a pinch of salt, although they do make sense.

Expected dates are mid- October (around 15 -16th), 2010. First handsets shipping around in November/December.

Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher. (Currently 1Ghz is the maximum speed chipset! Backs up rumours of faster and possibly dual core chips later this year)

New 1280×760 resolution available for the devices with displays of 4” and higher. (Tablet anyone?.....)

    Completely revamped user interface.

Android’s split into 2 branches becomes official. 3.0 for top of the line/high end devices. Cheap, low-end mass market handsets will keep Android 2.1/2.2

All very exciting indeed, I'm sure this is the first of many rumours over the summer.

Thanks to Unwired view for the headsup!

If you buy a high-end phone today (Nexus one/Desire/Evo 4G), then you are mostly OK. All signals are that OS 3.0 is only for high-end phones that will co-exist with the current 2.1/2.2 (these will be only for low and medium end phones).

The are already faster CPUs available (from Qualcomm), that run on higher frequency than 1GHz and are dual-core. However, there is still no phone announced with such CPUs.

So, you need to fly high to get the Gingerbread...

The only difference is that we (me and vegetaleb) will get the update at the launchday whilst you'll have to wait for HTC to get it going

Ha ha. I don't mind to wait a bit longer. HTC Sense has its advantages...
